How to play
Amber/Amethyst Madrigal tribal midrange. The whole Encanto family in one deck — Mirabel anchors the lore engine, Casa Madrigal generates passive lore at 1 ink, and Mirabel - Gift of the Family compounds every other Madrigal's quest into bonus lore. You're not racing. You're not stalling. You're stacking a wide board of 2/4 and 3/5 family members and counting on the engine math.
The engine — three pieces that have to land:
- Casa Madrigal - Casita on T1 for free lore drip. 1 ink, every turn you have a character at the location, +1 lore.
- Mirabel - Prophecy Finder T2 for Support. Her quest hands her ¤ to a teammate, swinging a 4-cost into a 4-strength challenger when needed.
- Mirabel - Gift of the Family T5 for SAVING THE MIRACLE — when she quests, every other Madrigal you control gets +1 ◊ that turn. Three other questers = +3 bonus lore the turn she fires.
Quest, almost always. Most of this board is built to quest, not challenge. The 1¤ statlines on Alma, Julieta, and Pepa are not combat profiles — they're engine bodies that survive thanks to 3-5 willpower and Casita's heal-by-relocation utility. Only Luisa - Magically Strong One (Rush, 4¤) and Camilo - Family Copycat (3¤) want to challenge.
Matchup role: midrange grind. You outlast aggro on willpower and out-value control via Mirabel - Gift of the Family + Camilo Copycat IMITATE loops. The deck is slow off the curve — accept that the first 3 turns are setup, not pressure.
Lore math: by T6 you should have Casita active (+1), 2-3 Madrigals questing for 1-2 each (+3-6), and Mirabel - Gift of the Family compounding (+2-3 bonus). That's 6-10 lore on a single turn, sustained.
Mulligan
Single-pattern keep. Casa Madrigal - Casita + a 2-3 cost Madrigal + an inkable 4-5 cost.
Always keep:
- Casa Madrigal - Casita every time. 1-ink Location, the engine starts here. With 4 copies you should see one in your opening 7.
- Agustin Madrigal - Clumsy Dad or Mirabel - Prophecy Finder as your turn 1-2 body.
- Alma Madrigal - Family Matriarch if you're keeping anything else specific in hand — her TO THE TABLE trigger top-decks any Madrigal you want for turn 4.
Conditional keep on the draw:
- Julieta Madrigal - Excellent Cook — her SIGNATURE RECIPE heal-2-and-draw fixes a clogged hand. Worth keeping if you have a 4-WP body already in hand for her to heal proactively (it triggers on any chosen character, including undamaged ones, but the draw only fires if you removed damage).
- Dolores Madrigal - Easy Listener when going second — she'll see opponents' exerted T3 questers, triggering her MAGICAL INFORMANT draw on T4.
Ship hands:
- All-5-cost openers. Mirabel - Gift of the Family + Isabela + Pepa with no early body = 4 dead turns before you can pay for any of them.
- Pure non-Madrigal hands (impossible here — there are zero non-Madrigals in the deck, so this only fails if you keep 7 cards that are all 5+ cost).
- No location + no 1-2 drop. You start behind on tempo and never catch up.
Ideal T1-T4 line: Casita T1 (1 ink) → Agustin T1 same turn OR Mirabel Prophecy Finder T2 → Alma T3 (tutor for Mirabel - Gift of the Family) → Mirabel - Gift of the Family or Dolores T4-T5. End of T5 you have 3-4 questers and the bonus-lore engine online.
Key cards
Openers — play turn 1-2, quest from turn 2-3:
- Agustin Madrigal - Clumsy Dad: 1-ink 2/2 1-lore Amber inkable. No ability text — just a vanilla 2/2. Your best turn 1 play. Above-rate stats for a 1-drop (most 1-cost characters are 1/2 or 2/1); the 2/2 body survives Strength of a Raging Fire and most 1-cost challenges.
- Mirabel Madrigal - Prophecy Finder: 2-ink 2/2 1-lore Amber inkable. Support — "Whenever this character quests, you may add their ¤ to another chosen character's ¤ this turn." On T2 she just quests for 1. Her real value comes T4+ when you have a 4-cost teammate (Bruno - Undetected Uncle) needing a temporary +2¤ to win a challenge trade.
- Casa Madrigal - Casita: 1-ink 6-WP Amethyst Location, move cost 1. OUR HOME — "At the start of your turn, if you have a character here gain 1 lore." Drop T1 if Amethyst-inkable, otherwise hold for the first turn you have 2 ink to spare. Move a quester there next turn for the +1 lore trigger. 6 WP survives almost any single-shot removal.
Engines — the spine of the deck:
- Alma Madrigal - Family Matriarch: 3-ink 1/3 2-lore Amber NON-inkable. TO THE TABLE — "When you play this character, you may search your deck for a Madrigal character card and reveal that card to all players. Shuffle your deck and put that card on top of it." Tutor effect on entry. The card is on top of your library, not in hand, so opponents can interact with your topdeck via Pepa-style exert effects only if they have one. Tutor for Mirabel - Gift of the Family on T3 → draw her T4 → cast T5.
- Julieta Madrigal - Excellent Cook: 3-ink 1/4 1-lore Amber inkable. SIGNATURE RECIPE — "When you play this character, you may remove up to 2 damage from chosen character. If you removed damage this way, you may draw a card." Plays double duty: keeps a damaged Camilo or Luisa alive AND cycles. Don't cast her on an empty board — the draw is conditional on actually removing damage.
- Mirabel Madrigal - Gift of the Family: 5-ink 3/5 2-lore Amber NON-inkable. Support AND SAVING THE MIRACLE — "Whenever this character quests, your other Madrigal characters get +1 ◊ this turn." When she quests with 3 other Madrigals questing same turn, you gain 2 (her) + 3×(their lore +1) instead of 2+3×(their lore). The +1 ◊ stacks across your whole board for that single turn. This is the deck's lore engine.
- Dolores Madrigal - Easy Listener: 4-ink 3/3 2-lore Amethyst inkable. MAGICAL INFORMANT — "When you play this character, if an opponent has an exerted character in play, you may draw a card." Time her drop AFTER opponent quests on their T3-T4. Free card whenever opponent has tapped anything.
- Bruno Madrigal - Undetected Uncle: 4-ink 3/3 1-lore Amethyst inkable Evasive. YOU JUST HAVE TO SEE IT — "⟳ — Name a card, then reveal the top card of your deck. If it's the named card, put that card into your hand and gain 3 lore. Otherwise, put it on the top of your deck." Evasive 3/3 body is good on its own. The activation is high-variance; only fire it when you can name a card with 4+ copies left in the deck (e.g., name Casa Madrigal early if you've played zero copies — ~8% hit rate from a 50-card deck with 4 copies left). The bigger payoff is the 3-lore swing when it hits.
Threats — your quest-power profile:
- Camilo Madrigal - Prankster: 4-ink 2/5 1-lore Amethyst inkable. MANY FORMS — "At the start of your turn, you may choose one: This character gets +1 ◊ this turn / This character gains Challenger +2 this turn." Default to +1 ◊ (2 lore/turn) until opponent commits a target you want to challenge profitably. The +2 Challenger makes Camilo a 4¤ attacker, enough to push through most 4-WP defenders.
- Mirabel Madrigal - Family Gatherer: 5-ink 5/5 5-lore Amber inkable. NOT WITHOUT MY FAMILY — "You can't play this character unless you have 5 or more characters in play." Plays as the 5-character-tribal payoff. 5 lore on quest is the highest lore stat in the deck. Hold her until T6+ with a full board. Inkable backup early.
- Isabela Madrigal - Golden Child: 5-ink 3/4 1-lore Amethyst inkable Evasive. LADIES FIRST — "During your turn, if no other character has quested this turn, this character gets +3 ◊." LEAVE IT TO ME — "Whenever this character quests, your other characters can't quest for the rest of this turn." Critical sequencing: Isabela MUST quest FIRST for the +3 lore bonus, but once she quests she shuts down the rest of your board. Math: Isabela-only quest = 4 lore. Three Madrigals (avg 1.5 lore each) without Isabela = 4.5 lore. The +3 bonus is roughly break-even with a wide board; her real value is when you only have 1-2 other questers and 4 lore from Isabela alone outpaces them. Evasive body also makes her a clean defender vs non-Evasive boards.
- Luisa Madrigal - Magically Strong One: 4-ink 4/3 1-lore Amethyst NON-inkable Rush. The only Rush in the deck. Drop her on T4 to remove an opposing 3-WP threat the turn she lands. 3 WP makes her fragile after — don't expect a quester body in followup turns unless protected.
- Camilo Madrigal - Family Copycat: 6-ink 3/7 1-lore Amethyst inkable. IMITATE — "Whenever this character quests, you may gain lore equal to the ◊ of chosen other character of yours. Return that character to your hand." The bounce engine. Best target: your own Mirabel - Family Gatherer (5 lore returned to hand, replay her next turn for 5 more) OR Alma (2 lore + replay the tutor). 7 WP wall is also one of the deck's most durable blockers.
Closers / Top-end:
- Luisa Madrigal - Entertaining Muscle: 6-ink 4/8 3-lore Amethyst NON-inkable. No ability — just 4/8 with 3 lore. The deck's biggest body. 8 WP shrugs off almost everything; 3 lore/turn is one of the best rates in Lorcana. Drop her by T6-T7 once you have Casita lore drip + Mirabel engine running.
- Look at This Family: 7-ink Amber Song. Sing Together 7 — "Any number of your or your teammates' characters with total cost 7 or more may ⟳ to sing this song for free. Look at the top 5 cards of your deck. You may reveal up to 2 character cards and put them into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your deck in any order." Tap 2+ characters totaling 7 cost to sing free. Dig 5 for any 2 characters — pure card selection, no lore. Use on T5+ when you have a fat board and need to find a specific finisher.
Tempo / Disruption:
- Pepa Madrigal - Weather Maker: 5-ink 1/5 1-lore Amethyst NON-inkable. IT LOOKS LIKE RAIN — "When you play this character, you may exert chosen opposing character. That character can't ready at the start of their next turn unless they're at a location." Soft Time Walk on their best body. Target their highest-lore quester after they've already quested for the turn — Pepa exerts them, they sit tapped through their ready step, miss a full turn of lore. Doesn't work on characters at a Location (their Casa-equivalent or Motunui breaks the lock).
- Bruno Madrigal - Out of the Shadows: 5-ink 4/5 1-lore Amethyst NON-inkable. IT WAS YOUR VISION — "When you play this character, chosen character gains 'When this character is banished in a challenge, you may return this card to your hand' this turn." Save-bomb. Cast Bruno on the turn you commit Mirabel - Family Gatherer or Luisa Entertaining Muscle to a 5-cost body so a Dragon Fire or removal swap loses tempo against you.
Matchups
vs. Amethyst/Sapphire Evasive (Unfavorable): Watch for: Dumbo - Ninth Wonder of the Universe, Hades - Looking for a Deal The format's biggest archetype (~22% metashare) and our hardest matchup. Their Evasive characters quest right past our 1-3¤ bodies — only Isabela and Bruno Undetected can challenge back, and committing them to combat shuts off the engine. Race plan: deploy Casa Madrigal T1, double Madrigal T3-T4, and aim for Mirabel - Gift of the Family + 3 other questers by T5 to push 6-8 lore in a single turn. Pepa's exert lock on their Hades or Dumbo buys exactly one turn — time it for the swing turn, not preemptively.
vs. Amber/Emerald Aggro (Favorable): Watch for: Tramp - Street-Smart Dog, Under the Sea Best matchup. Their 1-2 WP flood crashes into Alma, Julieta, and Camilo - Prankster (4-5 WP each), and Casa Madrigal's 6 WP shrugs off everything they have. Julieta's SIGNATURE RECIPE heals damage off Camilo or Bruno Undetected and cycles a card — net positive on every Tramp swing into us. Watch for Under the Sea around T5 — if it lands on a board where we have 5+ characters, we lose 5 lore worth of damage. Hold Bruno - Out of the Shadows to bait Under the Sea after a key body.
vs. Amethyst/Steel Challengers (Unfavorable): Watch for: Beast - Snowfield Troublemaker, Strength of a Raging Fire Their plan is built to punish wide-board midrange. Strength of a Raging Fire at 3-4 of their bodies clears Alma, Julieta, Mirabel Prophecy Finder simultaneously — and we have zero combat removal to interrupt the setup. Lean on Casa Madrigal's location healing (move damaged characters there for 6 WP shelter) and bait Raging Fire with Bruno - Out of the Shadows's save trigger up. Pepa's exert lock can delay a key challenger by one turn. Aim to win the lore race before they assemble the board-trade — 16+ lore by T7.
vs. Amber/Steel Steelsong (Favorable): Watch for: He Hurled His Thunderbolt, Angel - Experiment 624 Songs are slower than our direct lore generation. He Hurled His Thunderbolt can clear 2 of our 3-WP questers (Mirabel Prophecy Finder, Dolores, Bruno Undetected) but we replay denser; their 5-cost setup window matches ours, and we have more 2-lore questers in absolute count. Angel - Experiment 624 scaling matters around T6 — by then we should have Mirabel - Gift of the Family triggering + Luisa Entertaining Muscle on board. Pepa Weather Maker is excellent here — locks their key questing character through a critical turn.
vs. Ruby/Sapphire Control (Unfavorable): Watch for: Maui - Hero to All, A Pirate's Life Their Maui hard-removes our top-end (Luisa Entertaining Muscle, Mirabel - Family Gatherer) for clean tempo, and Sapphire draw outpaces our engine. Apply pressure before T8 — Casa Madrigal lore drip + early double Mirabel + Camilo - Family Copycat IMITATE on a 5-lore Family Gatherer is our race plan. Don't deploy Family Gatherer alone — pair her with a Bruno - Out of the Shadows save trigger so single-target removal trades resources, not just tempo.
vs. Amber/Ruby Aggro (Even): Watch for: Aurora - Holding Court, Dragon Fire Race shape — they pressure 4-5 lore/turn from T3 onward, we set up to 6-10 lore/turn from T6 onward. We lose if we tank-mode through their early bodies; we win if we trade questing lore at parity until T6 when our engine compounds. Camilo - Prankster's Challenger +2 mode is the cleanest answer to their 1-2 WP openers — flip to challenge mode on her trigger, swing for 4 damage. Casa Madrigal's heal-via-relocation keeps Julieta + Bruno Undetected alive across Dragon Fire turns.
Tune It
Against Evasive-heavy meta: -2 Antonio Madrigal - Animal Expert / +2 additional Evasive defender. Antonio is a vanilla 3/4 1-lore body and lowest-impact slot in the deck. Bruno - Undetected Uncle is your only deck-internal Evasive blocker; consider sideboard-style swap into items or supplemental Madrigal Evasive options if available in Infinity.
Against control-heavy meta: -1 Look at This Family / +1 third Mirabel - Family Gatherer. The Sing Together song is card selection, not card advantage — when opponents run hard removal, finding a second Mirabel - Family Gatherer matters more than digging for any character. Third copy also de-risks the "no Family Gatherer ever" mulligan trap.
Against aggro-heavy meta: -2 Bruno Madrigal - Out of the Shadows / +2 Julieta Madrigal - Excellent Cook. (Note: Julieta is currently at 4 copies — playset cap. This swap requires a different healer slot if it exists in your Infinity-legal pool. Skip if no alternative.) Net effect: trade a 5-cost save-bomb for a 3-cost heal-and-cycle that comes online earlier.
Format note — Infinity-only deck: 11 of the 17 unique characters are Set 4 Encanto cards (rotated out of Core 2025-09-05). Core-legal subset: Mirabel - Family Gatherer (S5), Julieta - Excellent Cook (S4 — verify reprints), Dolores - Easy Listener (S4 — verify reprints), Camilo - Prankster (S4 — verify reprints), Camilo - Family Copycat (S5), Bruno - Undetected Uncle (S4 — verify reprints), Luisa - Entertaining Muscle (S5), Luisa - Magically Strong One (S4 — verify reprints), Look at This Family (S4 — verify reprints), Casa Madrigal - Casita (S4 — verify reprints). A Core variant would lose Mirabel Prophecy Finder, Mirabel Gift of the Family (THE engine), Alma, Agustin, Félix, Pepa, Bruno Out of the Shadows, Isabela Golden Child, Antonio. That's the deck's entire engine — no viable Core conversion. Market this as Infinity-only.
Outlook: stable for Infinity since the format is non-rotating. No near-term shifts expected. A future S12+ Madrigal printing that breaks the 5-character clause on Family Gatherer or replaces the Mirabel Gift of the Family quest-trigger would directly upgrade the engine — until then this list is the ceiling of available Madrigal pieces.
