How to play

Emerald/Sapphire self-discard engine. Every turn you push 2+ cards into your own discard on purpose — that single condition unlocks six different payoff triggers across the curve. Lyle drains a lore from each opponent at end of turn. Kida ramps the inkwell on quest. Helga drops at 2 ink instead of 4. Kashekim ramps again at end step. The deck mills itself into power.

Three discard checkpoints — these are the only turns that matter:

  • Turn 2 — first 2-card discard turn: Lyle ETB (draw+discard = 1) + Shepherd's Journal activation (look top → discard = 2). End of turn: DIRTY TRICKS fires, opponent loses 1 lore.
  • Turn 4 — discount engine online: Gaetan Moliere — Clever Burrower quest = UNEARTH draw 2 / discard 2. That single quest trigger hits the threshold alone, unlocking Helga — No Backup Needed at 2 ink instead of 4.
  • Turn 8 — Crystal Scion lands: Shift 6 onto a Kida already on board. FLOOD OF POWER puts up to 5 cards from discard into your inkwell. The deck's entire self-mill becomes ramp in one trigger.

The discard rule. The 2-in-discard condition is the only thing that matters. Plan every turn around hitting it. Inking, ETB discards, and quest triggers all count. If you can't hit it, you lose tempo on every payoff that turn.

Matchup role: controller in early game (your discount-Helga walls everything they put down), beatdown from turn 6 onward (Crystal Scion + Helga — Prepared for Anything close fast). Format: Infinity-only — 21 of 26 cards are S12 Inf-locked.

Mulligan

Single-pattern keep. A 2-cost enabler + a discard payoff + an inkable.

Always keep:

  • Lyle Tiberius Rourke - Adventurer for Hire in any hand. He's the 2-cost engine starter — ETB triggers a draw-and-discard, and his end-of-turn DIRTY TRICKS punishes the opponent every turn the threshold hits.
  • Shepherd's Journal alongside Lyle. MARGIN NOTES lets you look at the top card and choose to send it to discard, giving deterministic threshold-hits on turns Lyle alone isn't enough.
  • Kida - Discovering the Unknown when you already have a 2-drop. She's the curve-3 payoff that turns the discard engine into inkwell ramp on every quest.

Conditional keep: Gaetan Moliere - Clever Burrower if you have a turn-2 play in hand. UNEARTH is the single most powerful trigger in the deck — one quest = 2 discards = threshold hit by itself.

Ship blind:

  • All-7/8-cost hands. Milo - Getting His Hands Dirty and Kida - Crystal Scion are payoffs, not openers. Hands starting at 5-drop top-end mean three wasted development turns.
  • All-action hands. Sabotage + Escape Plan + Repair with no characters means no engine fuel and no questers.
  • Multiple uninkable copies in the opening seven. Most of the S12 payoffs (Helga - Prepared, Crystal Scion, Milo - Getting His Hands Dirty) are uninkable — keep one as a payoff, ship the rest.

Ideal T1-T3 line: Milo - Clever Cartographer quests T1 → Lyle Rourke + Shepherd's Journal T2 (2 discards, DIRTY TRICKS fires, opponent at -1 lore) → Kida - Discovering the Unknown T3 + Sabotage to hit threshold again → Kida quest ramps an ink. End of T3: 2 questers, 1 item, +1 inkwell, opponent at -1 lore.

Key cards

Openers (turn 1-2):

  • Milo Thatch - Clever Cartographer: 1-cost 2/2 1-lore Emerald inkable. Your only 1-drop and the Shift target for Milo - Getting His Hands Dirty. Always play turn 1 if drawn.
  • Lyle Tiberius Rourke - Adventurer for Hire: 2-cost 2/2 1-lore Emerald inkable. EYE FOR VALUE draws and discards on entry; DIRTY TRICKS makes each opponent lose 1 lore at end of turn when 2+ cards hit your discard that turn. Contributes 1 to the count alone.
  • Kida - Guardian of the Path: 2-cost 2/3 1-lore Sapphire inkable. NATURAL DEFENSE shrinks an opposing character by 2 strength on play. Tempo body and Crystal Scion Shift target.

Engines (discard payoffs):

  • Kida - Discovering the Unknown: 3-cost 3/4 1-lore Sapphire inkable. READ THE RUNES — quest with 2+ in discard this turn = put top of deck into inkwell. Inkwell ramp every turn the engine fires.
  • Helga Sinclair - No Backup Needed: 4-cost 5/4 1-lore Emerald inkable. CRISIS MANAGEMENT — costs 2 less if 2+ cards were put into discard this turn. Lands at 2 ink for a 5/4 body. Sequence discards FIRST, then drop her.
  • Kashekim - Wise King: 5-cost 4/6 2-lore Sapphire inkable. STRENGTH IN MEMORY — end-of-turn inkwell ramp on the same threshold. Pairs with Kida - Discovering the Unknown for double-ramp turns.
  • Helga Sinclair - Prepared for Anything: 6-cost 5/5 2-lore Emerald inkable. COMBAT TRAINING quests deal 1 damage, scaled to 2 with the discard threshold. Repeatable ping.

Discard fuel:

  • Gaetan Moliere - Clever Burrower: 4-cost 2/5 1-lore Emerald inkable, Evasive. UNEARTH — quest to "draw 2 cards, then choose and discard 2 cards." Hits the threshold in one trigger. Most important engine card after Lyle.
  • Shepherd's Journal: 2-cost Sapphire item, uninkable. MARGIN NOTES — on play, look at top card and either keep or send to discard. KEY TO THE PUZZLE — tap, banish to return an item from discard. Deterministic 1-discard plus item recursion.

Closers:

  • Milo Thatch - Getting His Hands Dirty: 7-cost 5/5 3-lore Emerald inkable, Ward. SCHOLAR'S GAMBIT bounces a chosen character on entry (discard cost). PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE draws a card at end of turn when threshold hits. Ward blocks targeted removal.
  • Kida - Crystal Scion: 8-cost 7/7 2-lore Sapphire inkable, Floodborn, Shift 6. FLOOD OF POWER — each player may bank up to 5 cards from their discard into their inkwell. The trade favors you because your discard is intentionally deeper than theirs. THE PATH REVEALED is a 7-ink activated tutor mode.

Items:

  • Atlantean Crystal: 2-cost Sapphire item, inkable. SHIELDING LIGHT — exert + 2 ink grants Resist +2 and Support to a chosen character until your next turn. Stacks lethal lines with Helga - Prepared's quest ping.
  • Gyro-Evac: 3-cost Emerald item, uninkable. TAKE HER UP grants Evasive for 1 ink. CRASH LANDING banishes the item for symmetric "each player loses 2 lore" — only fire when behind on lore.

Interaction:

  • Sabotage: 3-cost Emerald action, inkable. Banishes a chosen item or location AND all other items or locations with the same name. Hard-removal against item/location decks; inkable filler otherwise. Note: this does NOT discard cards from hand — it is not part of the engine fuel.
  • Repair: 2-cost Sapphire action, inkable. Removes up to 3 damage from one of your characters or locations. Saves a quested Kashekim or Helga from a 3-damage challenge.
  • Escape Plan: 5-cost Sapphire action, uninkable. Gated by 2+ in discard. Each player banks 2 of their own characters into the inkwell. You ramp; they lose threats. Best when their board is small.

Matchups

vs. Amethyst/Sapphire Evasive (Unfavorable): Watch for: Hades - Looking for a Deal, Dumbo - Ninth Wonder of the Universe Their Evasive bypasses your 2-3 WP early bodies entirely. Your only Evasive blockers are Gaetan - Clever Burrower (4-cost) and Gyro-Evac grants. Race plan: hit the 2-discard threshold every turn from T2 onward so Lyle's DIRTY TRICKS chips them while you assemble Crystal Scion by T8. Joshua Sweet - Field Surgeon's NO PATIENCE (forces opponent discard on challenge) doesn't fire if they refuse to engage him — he's effectively a 2-cost 2/1 2-lore quester in this matchup.

vs. Amber/Emerald Aggro (Even): Watch for: Tramp - Street-Smart Dog, Grandmother Willow - Ancient Advisor Race-shape. Their flood challenges your bodies; you cost-reduce Helga - No Backup Needed to 2 ink and wall their 1-2 WP swarm with a 5/4. Helga - Vengeful Partner's NOTHING PERSONAL (when challenged and banished, banish the challenging character) punishes their 2-cost attackers — bait them into the trade. Atlantean Crystal Support routes their incoming damage onto a redirector.

vs. Amethyst/Steel Challengers (Favorable): Watch for: Strength of a Raging Fire, Beast - Snowfield Troublemaker Your 4-6 WP backline (Kida - Discovering the Unknown, Gaetan - Clever Burrower, Kashekim - Wise King) outsizes their Challenger ramp. They need their board first before Strength of a Raging Fire scales — your discount Helga lands a turn before they're ready. Helga - Prepared for Anything's quest ping picks off their 1-WP supports. Save Sabotage for any item or location they deploy.

vs. Amber/Steel Steelsong (Favorable): Watch for: He Hurled His Thunderbolt, Angel - Experiment 624 Songs hit hard, but your engine generates lore-loss for the opponent before they assemble their song chain. Lyle's DIRTY TRICKS drains lore every turn; Kida's quest-ramp accelerates your top-end by 1-2 turns. He Hurled His Thunderbolt clears two of your 2-WP bodies but Kashekim (6 WP) and Crystal Scion (7 WP) survive. Out-pace their T5 spike with discount Helga turns earlier.

vs. Ruby/Sapphire Control (Unfavorable): Watch for: Maui - Hero to All, A Pirate's Life Their hard-removal answers Crystal Scion cleanly; Sapphire draw refills their answer pile faster than you deploy threats. Plan for a longer game: keep Shepherd's Journal active for item recursion to chain Sabotage if they run their own engine items; hold Milo - Getting His Hands Dirty's ETB bounce for their resolved Maui. Past T9 they win on grind; we need Crystal Scion + 2 questers on board by T8 to close before their Maui chain stabilizes.

vs. Mirror (Emerald/Sapphire Self-Discard) (Even): Watch for: Kida - Crystal Scion, Helga Sinclair - No Backup Needed Whoever stacks their discard pile faster wins. Both decks are accelerating into the same Crystal Scion swing turn — sequence around the 8-cost finisher first. Joshua Sweet's NO PATIENCE forces THEM to discard on challenge, sabotaging their threshold. Helga - Vengeful Partner trades with their early aggressors. Win condition: land Crystal Scion first.

Tune It

Against Evasive-heavy meta (Hades-engine, Ariel-style flying questers): -1 Repair / -1 Atlantean Crystal / +2 Gyro-Evac. Gyro-Evac's TAKE HER UP grants Evasive to a Crystal Scion or Helga - Prepared turn, letting your quest-pings go through unblocked. Repair is a niche damage-remove that's dead vs. Evasive engines that don't engage your bodies.

Against item/location-heavy meta (Fishbone Quill engines, location decks): keep Sabotage at 4 — it's already maxed. If meta tilts further toward items, swap -2 Joshua Sweet - Field Surgeon / +2 a second item-removal action when WU spoilers settle. Joshua Sweet's NO PATIENCE punishes challenges; against item decks that don't challenge into you, he's a 2-lore body and nothing more.

Against control-heavy meta (Maui-engine, Pirate's Life): -1 Escape Plan / +1 Sabotage. Escape Plan's symmetric inkwell-bench is worse when they have an engine you can't disrupt; Sabotage removes the engine cards directly.

Core variant: NOT SHIPPABLE. Only 4 of the 26 cards in the pool are Core-legal (Atlantean Crystal, Gaetan Moliere - The Mole, Wilhelmina Packard - The Radio Operator, Kida - Creative Thinker). The discard-engine payoffs and enablers are S12 Infinity-only. Revisit when S12 rotates into Core (estimated September 2026 rotation).

Outlook: Infinity-only SKU through S12 rotation. The engine is fully assembled — no near-term S13 spoilers expected to reshape the discard archetype. Restock cap based on S12 single availability; commons and uncommons priced at floor, rares may run higher.
