How to play
Ruby/Sapphire item-recursion midrange. This deck wants items in the discard, not on the board. Lumiere - Nimble Candelabra at 2 ink (1/1 ★2) gains Evasive while any item card sits in your discard - that's a 2-lore Evasive quester for 2 ink, the best rate at that slot in the format. Belle - Inventive Engineer at 3 ink quests for 2 lore AND discounts the next item you play that turn. Belle's House - Maurice's Workshop (1-cost location) discounts items by another 1 ink while you have a character there. Stack both reductions and items become 2 ink cheaper - free in many cases.
Three pace checkpoints:
- Turn 3 - 2-3 lore on board, item in discard: ink Belle's House T1, drop an item T2, banish for value T3 to trigger Lumiere's Evasive. Below 2 lore by end T3 means the engine hasn't activated.
- Turn 5 - 8-10 lore, recursion humming: Maurice's Machine banished and rebuilding cheap items via BREAK DOWN. Belle - Inventive Engineer has quested 2-3 times, items now cost 2 ink less per play.
- Turn 7 - Shift Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire OR you've lost the race: with 4+ items in discard, SALVAGE drops her Shift cost from 7 to 3 ink. Her REPURPOSE quest trigger returns 3 items to the bottom of your deck for 3 lore each quest.
The win plan: Lumiere Evasive accumulates lore uncontested while item-banish triggers cycle. Belle - Apprentice Inventor lands for free by banishing a used item. Beast - Frustrated Designer ETB-deals 5 damage by banishing 2 items - clears any blocker. Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire closes via 7/7 ★3 questing with mass item recursion.
Matchup role: beatdown against grind decks (your discounted recursion engine compounds faster than their answer pile); controller against aggro (Beast - Frustrated Designer removes their best body, Four Dozen Eggs Resist +2 blunts their swing turn).
Mulligan
Two-option blind alter.
- Option 1 - Engine keep (default): Belle's House - Maurice's Workshop (1c location) + Unconventional Tool (1c item) + a 3-cost Belle (Belle - Inventive Engineer or Belle - Apprentice Inventor) + an inkable. Establishes location T1, item T1-T2, Belle T3. Item already in play to banish for the T3 discount stack.
- Option 2 - Pace keep (vs aggro): Lumiere - Nimble Candelabra (2c, ★2 Evasive when item in discard) + any item (Unconventional Tool or Maurice's Machine) + a 3-cost Belle. Lumiere on curve T2, item banished T3, Evasive online from T3 onward for 2 lore/turn uncontested.
OTP vs OTD:
- OTP: prefer Option 1 - you curve the location T1 + Unconventional Tool T1 into a Belle T3 (Inventive Engineer at her full 3c — Belle's House discounts items only, not characters) and quest her T4. Your engine is one turn ahead.
- OTD: prefer Option 2 - Lumiere becomes your race answer. Their T2 hits, you ink T2, drop a 2-drop, then T3 you banish your T2 item to flip Lumiere's Evasive on AND drop Belle - Inventive Engineer. The extra OTD ink lets you compress two engine plays into the same turn.
Conditional keeps:
- Maurice's Machine (3c) keeps when paired with a 1-cost item - the synergy is banish Maurice's Machine, BREAK DOWN returns the cheap item to hand, replay it free under Belle's House.
- Belle - Apprentice Inventor keeps if you also have an item to banish - her WHAT A MESS triggers in response to banishing your item, dropping a 3/3 1-lore body for 0 ink.
Never keep blind: Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire (9-cost dead opener - she's a Shift target, not a hard cast), Beast - Frustrated Designer (6-cost uninkable, dead before T6), all-character hands with zero items or location, all-item hands with zero questers.
Ideal T1-T3 line: Belle's House - Maurice's Workshop + Unconventional Tool T1 (ink the 3rd card) - Lumiere - Nimble Candelabra T2 at her full 2 ink (Belle's House discounts items only — Lumiere pays full) - T3 banish Unconventional Tool (FIXED IN NO TIME -2 next item) + play Belle - Inventive Engineer at her full 3 ink. Lumiere quests for 2 with Evasive (Unconv Tool in discard). End of T3: 2 lore on board, item recursion online, opponent has to face an Evasive 2-lore quester they probably can't answer.
Key cards
1-cost openers - play turn 1, build the engine:
- Belle's House - Maurice's Workshop: 1-cost 6 WP 0-lore Sapphire location, inkable. LABORATORY - if you have a character here, you pay 1 ink less to play items. The cost-reduction backbone. Drop T1, move a character onto it on T2 to activate the discount. Note: Inf-only (S3 location). 6 WP means even committed challenges spend 2-3 challenger turns to clear it.
- Monsieur D'Arque - Despicable Proprietor: 1-cost 1/2 1-lore Sapphire inkable. I'VE COME TO COLLECT - whenever he quests, you may banish chosen item of yours to draw a card. Quester + draw engine. Banish a fully-used Maurice's Machine for a free card. Don't waste his trigger on a fresh item - banish the dead ones.
- Unconventional Tool: 1-cost Ruby item, inkable. FIXED IN NO TIME - when this item is banished, you pay 2 ink less for the next item you play this turn. The item-chain accelerant. Banish it on a turn you're playing Maurice's Machine (3c) and Maurice's Machine becomes free via Belle's House (-1) + Unconv Tool (-2) = 0 ink.
2-cost early game - questing and pressure:
- Lumiere - Nimble Candelabra: 2-cost 1/1 2-LORE Ruby inkable. QUICK-STEP - while you have an item card in your discard, this character gains Evasive. The deck's signature card. 2 lore at 2 ink with Evasive when the engine is online is unmatched rate. Drop T2; once any item dies, Lumiere is a 2-lore Evasive quester opponents have no realistic answer to outside Dragon Fire-class removal.
- Lumiere - Fiery Friend: 2-cost 2/2 1-lore Ruby inkable. FERVENT ADDRESS - your other characters get +1 STR. Anthem-style buff. Helps Beast - Snowfield Troublemaker swing through 4-WP walls and lets Belle - Inventive Engineer (2 STR + 1 = 3 STR) trade up.
- LeFou - Instigator: 2-cost 2/2 1-lore Ruby inkable. FAN THE FLAMES - when you play this character, ready chosen character. They can't quest for the rest of this turn. Tempo unlock - ready a Lumiere - Nimble Candelabra to challenge on your turn, or ready a Belle - Inventive Engineer to quest twice in a turn (her TINKER trigger fires per quest = double item discount).
- Beast - Aggressive Lord: 2-cost 3/2 1-lore Ruby inkable. Boost 2 ink - once per turn pay 2 ink to put the top card of your deck facedown under him. THAT'S MINE - whenever he challenges another character, if there's a card under him, each opponent loses 1 lore and you gain 1 lore. Combat-pressure 2-drop with a tempo Boost trigger. Don't pay the Boost until you can swing the same turn.
- Beast - Snowfield Troublemaker: 2-cost 3/1 1-lore Ruby inkable. Rush. DYNAMIC MANEUVER - whenever this character challenges, if he's at a location, he takes no damage from the challenge. Rush + location-immunity. Drops T2 with Rush to clear a 2-3 STR opposing quester; if Belle's House is already out, move him on for damage-free challenges.
3-cost engines - the deck's core:
- Belle - Inventive Engineer: 3-cost 2/3 2-LORE Sapphire inkable, Inventor. TINKER - whenever this character quests, you pay 1 ink less for the next item you play this turn. The cost-reduction stack. Quest her T4 + play Maurice's Machine same turn: Belle's House (-1) + TINKER (-1) = Maurice's Machine for 1 ink. The deck runs 4 copies because she's the single best card in the curve.
- Belle - Apprentice Inventor: 3-cost 3/3 1-lore Sapphire inkable, Inventor. WHAT A MESS - during your turn, you may banish chosen item of yours to play this character for free. The free 3/3 body. Banish a used item (Unconv Tool you've already discounted off of, or Maurice's Machine you've already retrieved with) to drop her for 0 ink. Stacks with engine pressure - she's an extra body the opponent has to remove without spending real tempo.
- Mrs. Potts - Head Housekeeper: 3-cost 2/4 1-lore Sapphire inkable. CLEAN UP - exert, banish one of your items, draw a card. The deck's primary card-advantage engine. Each turn you can exert Mrs. Potts and banish your most-discardable item to draw. Stacks with Unconventional Tool's FIXED IN NO TIME trigger - free draw plus -2 discount on next item.
- Maurice's Machine: 3-cost Ruby-Sapphire item, inkable. BREAK DOWN - when this item is banished, you may return an item card with cost 2 or less from your discard to your hand. The recursion loop's heart. Self-banish via Mrs. Potts, D'Arque quest trigger, or Maurice - Unconventional Inventor ETB; retrieve Unconventional Tool from discard; replay Unconv Tool free under Belle's House + TINKER stack. Run 4 copies.
- Belle's Favorite Book: 3-cost Sapphire item, UNINKABLE. CHAPTER THREE - exert, banish one of your other items, put the top card of your deck into your inkwell facedown and exerted. Ramp engine. Costs 2-3 ink effective via discounts. Banish Maurice's Machine to ramp AND retrieve a cheap item via BREAK DOWN in the same turn.
- Maurice's Workshop: 3-cost Sapphire item, UNINKABLE. LOOKING FOR THIS? - whenever you play another item, you may pay 1 ink to draw a card. Item-tribal draw engine. Inf-only (S2). Every subsequent item play is a 1-ink cantrip. Stacks with cost reductions - play Unconv Tool for 1 ink under Belle's House (-1 = 0 ink), pay 1 to draw via Maurice's Workshop. Net 1 ink + draw a card + item enters play.
- Time to Go!: 3-cost Ruby action, inkable. Banish chosen character of YOURS to draw 2 cards. If that character had a card under them, draw 3 cards instead. Self-sacrifice card-draw. Banish a Boost-loaded Beast - Aggressive Lord for the 3-card draw, or a damaged 2-drop you're about to lose anyway. Not an opponent-removal spell.
4-cost mid-game:
- Belle - Snowfield Strategist: 4-cost 2/3 2-LORE Sapphire inkable. WINTER STOCKPILE - whenever one of your characters is banished, you may put that card from your discard into your inkwell facedown and exerted. Death-to-ink converter. Every dead 2-drop becomes ink, lets the deck spike from 6 to 7+ ink without inking real threats.
- The Wardrobe - Perceptive Friend: 4-cost 3/4 1-lore Sapphire inkable. I HAVE JUST THE THING! - exert, choose and discard an item card, draw 2 cards. Discard-fuel + card-advantage. Pitch a Maurice's Machine into the discard (loading Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire's SALVAGE count); draw 2 to refuel.
- Maurice - Unconventional Inventor: 4-cost 5/2 1-lore Ruby Mentor/Inventor inkable. HOW ON EARTH DID THAT HAPPEN? - when you play this character, you may banish chosen item of yours to draw a card. If the banished item is named Maurice's Machine, you may also banish chosen character with 2 STR or less. The Maurice's Machine combo: play Maurice ETB, banish Maurice's Machine, draw 1, banish opposing 2-STR threat (Aurora, D'Arque, opponents' cheap 2-drops), THEN Machine's BREAK DOWN returns Unconv Tool from discard. One play = removal + draw + recursion.
- Four Dozen Eggs: 4-cost Sapphire song, inkable. A character with cost 4+ can exert to sing this song for free. Your characters gain Resist +2 until the start of your next turn (damage dealt to them is reduced by 2). Anti-burst protection. Sing free with Belle - Snowfield Strategist or The Wardrobe on the turn the opponent threatens a board-wide damage swing.
6-cost - the removal closer:
- Beast - Frustrated Designer: 6-cost 5/5 2-LORE Ruby-Sapphire UNINKABLE. I'VE HAD IT! - exert, 2 ink, banish 2 of your items - deal 5 damage to chosen character. The hard-removal closer. Deploy T6; the next turn ready, exert + pay 2 + banish 2 items (Unconv Tool, Maurice's Machine after retrieving from BREAK DOWN) to deal 5 damage. Banishing 2 items also feeds 2 BREAK DOWN triggers if both were Maurice's Machines, AND loads 2 items into discard for Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire's SALVAGE count.
9-cost - the game-ender:
- Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire: 9-cost 7/7 3-LORE Ruby-Sapphire Floodborn Hero/Princess/Inventor inkable, Shift 7. SALVAGE - for each item card in your discard, you pay 1 ink less to play this character using her Shift ability. REPURPOSE - whenever this character quests, you may put up to 3 item cards from your discard on the bottom of your deck to gain 1 lore for each item card moved this way. The closer. With 4 items in discard Shift cost is 7-4=3 ink. Drop her on any 3-cost Belle (Belle - Inventive Engineer or Belle - Apprentice Inventor) for the Shift cost reduced by items-in-discard. Then quest for 3 base + 3 items returned = 6 lore from one quest.
Interaction:
- Ever as Before: 2-cost Sapphire song, inkable. A character with cost 2+ can exert to sing this song for free. Remove up to 2 damage from any number of chosen characters. Healing across multiple characters. Sing free with a Lumiere or Belle - Inventive Engineer to undo a board-wide ping (Strength of a Raging Fire's 1-damage pass on your 2-WP bodies).
Matchups
vs. Amethyst/Sapphire Evasive (Even): Watch for: Dumbo - Ninth Wonder of the Universe, Hades - Looking for a Deal Their Evasive bodies bypass most of your board, but Lumiere - Nimble Candelabra matches them at 2-lore Evasive of your own once an item hits the discard. Race plan: get Lumiere online by T3 to keep questing pace, then drop Beast - Frustrated Designer on T6 to clear Dumbo or Hades via the 5-damage trigger (banish 2 items, +2 ink). They can't single-target your engine pieces faster than you can recur them via Maurice's Machine BREAK DOWN.
vs. Amber/Emerald Aggro (Unfavorable): Watch for: Tramp - Street-Smart Dog, Under the Sea Your engine takes 3 turns to spin up; aggro is doing 4-6 damage to your face every turn through that window. Belle's House - Maurice's Workshop at 6 WP soaks 2-3 challenges but doesn't quest for you. Mulligan hard for Belle - Apprentice Inventor + a cheap item (free 3/3 body T2-T3) and Four Dozen Eggs sung off The Wardrobe for the Resist +2 protection turn. Once you survive to T5, your removal package (Beast - Frustrated Designer, Time to Go! into Belle - Snowfield Strategist death-to-ink) stabilizes the matchup.
vs. Amethyst/Steel Challengers (Favorable): Watch for: Beast - Snowfield Troublemaker (mirror's challenger Beast), Strength of a Raging Fire Their challenger package scales with their board but lags your item-recursion development. Your 1-2 WP early questers die to Strength of a Raging Fire, but Belle - Snowfield Strategist's WINTER STOCKPILE converts those deaths into ink - effectively immunizing the deck against single-target removal. Belle's House at 6 WP is too expensive for them to challenge into. Race past their Strength of a Raging Fire turn with Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire Shift on T6-7.
vs. Amber/Steel Steelsong (Favorable): Watch for: He Hurled His Thunderbolt, Angel - Experiment 624 Songs are slower than item-recursion compounding. He Hurled His Thunderbolt clears 2 of your 2-WP bodies but you replay free Belle - Apprentice Inventor via WHAT A MESS while they spend 4 ink on the song. Their plan peaks T5-6; yours doesn't peak until Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire lands T6-7 via SALVAGE. Four Dozen Eggs sung free vs their He Hurled His Thunderbolt turn negates the entire song (Resist +2 reduces 2 damage to 0).
vs. Ruby/Sapphire Control (Even): Watch for: Maui - Hero to All, A Pirate's Life Mirror-color matchup. Their hard removal hits your engine pieces (Belle - Inventive Engineer, Mrs. Potts) cleanly, but every Belle banished feeds Belle - Snowfield Strategist's ink-up trigger - their removal becomes our ramp. Don't deploy Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire as a singleton threat; land her with 2+ other questers (Lumiere + a 3-cost Belle) so single-target removal can't isolate the SALVAGE turn. Belle - Apprentice Inventor's free-cast resilience keeps you replaying threats faster than they answer.
vs. Mirror (Ruby/Sapphire Inventor) (Even): Watch for: Beast - Frustrated Designer, Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire Whoever lands Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire's Shift turn first wins. Engine-density matters more than answer count - run a tight curve and target opposing Belle - Inventive Engineer with Beast - Frustrated Designer's 5-damage trigger. Time to Go! banishing your damaged 2-drops draws 2-3 cards (3 if Boost-loaded Beast was sacrificed), keeping your hand fuller than theirs. The race is on the Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire SALVAGE turn - they can't clear her once she's down with 6 lore the same turn she quests via REPURPOSE.
Tune It
Against burn/ping-heavy meta (decks running multiple Strength of a Raging Fire, Fire the Cannons! variants): -2 Beast - Aggressive Lord / +2 Mrs. Potts - Head Housekeeper. Aggressive Lord's 2-WP is a target for any 2-damage ping; Mrs. Potts at 2/4 survives those clears AND draws via CLEAN UP. Trades raw aggression for engine durability.
Against Evasive-heavy meta (Amethyst/Sapphire Hades, Dumbo decks): -2 LeFou - Instigator / +2 Time to Go!. LeFou's tempo unlock matters less when their key threats are Evasive (your readied attackers can't challenge them anyway). Time to Go! gives you draw-flexibility AND a way to sacrifice damaged bodies for more cards while racing.
Against item-hate (decks running Has Set My Heaaaaaart..., Be Prepared item-banish): -2 Maurice's Workshop (Inf-only item) / +2 Belle - Inventive Engineer (max copies if not already at 4). Stacking on the cost-reduction body makes you less reliant on the item permanent staying alive - Belle's TINKER discount only requires her to quest, not survive afterward.
Core-only variant (S5+ legal): drop 4× Belle's House - Maurice's Workshop (S3, Inf-only) and 2× Maurice's Workshop (S2, Inf-only). Add 2× more Time to Go! + 2× more Unconventional Tool + 2× a Core-legal 1-cost character (e.g., Eilonwy from S10). Engine runs at ~85% efficiency - item cost reduction is weaker without the location, but recursion via Maurice's Machine BREAK DOWN still functions. Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire (S7) is Core-legal so the finisher plan stays intact.
Infinity upgrade path (already maxed): this is an Infinity-first build - Belle's House and Maurice's Workshop are the marquee Inf cards. If S13 introduces a new item-tribal payoff or a Sapphire 1-cost location with even better synergy, the slot to consider trading is Belle's Favorite Book (uninkable ramp item) for a more on-theme replacement.
Outlook: Belle - Mechanic Extraordinaire, Belle - Apprentice Inventor, Maurice's Machine, and the Set 7 Inventor package are all S7 - Core-legal through Set 13 rotation. The Inf-only S2/S3 anchors carry no rotation risk in Infinity format. Watch S12 Wilds Unknown for any new item-recursion enabler that improves the BREAK DOWN chain - the deck's ceiling rises with every new cheap item.
