How to play

Sapphire/Steel Detective tribal midrange. Built around one switch: Chief Bogo - Calling the Shots. His DEPUTIZE gives every other character the Detective classification — and three engines come online at once. Judy Hopps - Lead Detective's LATERAL THINKING grants Alert + Resist +2 board-wide. Nick Wilde - Persistent Investigator's CASE CLOSED draws a card every time a Detective banishes a challenger. Detective's Badge hands the tag out for 1 ink + exert when Bogo isn't drawn. Land the Chief by T4 and your shell becomes a wall that draws cards while it questions suspects.

Three pace checkpoints:

Quest, mostly. Challenge when CASE CLOSED is live. Without Nick Wilde - Persistent Investigator in play, challenges trade tempo for nothing. With him, every Detective banish refunds a card.

Matchup role: controller. The deck wins by outlasting (Resist + Alert + draw refill), not racing.

Mulligan

Priority keeps:

Conditional keeps:

Ship blind: two 5-6 cost cards with no 1-3 drop; Bogo + Judy-Lead with nothing at 1-3 (no play before T4).

OTP vs OTD:

  • OTP: Nick-Sly T1 → Judy-Snowball T2 → 3-drop T3 → Bogo T4. Tribal switch flips T4.
  • OTD: Judy-Snowball T1 (UNDERDOG = 1 ink) → 2-drop T2 → 3-drop T3 → Bogo T4. OTD discount on Snowball is the deck's best tempo swing.

Ideal T1-T4 line (OTP): Nick-Sly T1 → Judy-Snowball T2 (quest Nick) → Francine or Duke-Surly T3 → Bogo T4. End of T4: 4-5 lore, 4 Detective-tagged bodies.

Key cards

1-drop opener:

  • Nick Wilde - Sly Fox Sleuth (1c Steel, 2/2 1L vanilla, native Detective): only 1-cost in the deck. 2/2 trades into opening 1-WPs cleanly. Counts for Lateral Thinking and Case Closed natively.

2-cost openers:

  • Judy Hopps - Snowball Patrol (2c Steel, 2/2 1L, Detective): "UNDERDOG If this is your first turn and you're not the first player, you pay 1 ⬡ less to play this character. Resist +1." OTD costs 1 ink — the deck's best tempo cheat.
  • Duke Weaselton - Small-Time Crook (2c Sapphire, 1/2 2L Ward, Inf-only): best lore-per-ink rate. Ward blocks soft-removal — opponents must challenge into her 2 WP to stop the lore drip.

3-cost slot:

  • Judy Hopps - Optimistic Officer (3c Sapphire, 2/3 2L): "DON'T CALL ME CUTE When you play this character, you may banish chosen item. Its player draws a card." Trigger is symmetrical — fire only when their item is winning the game.
  • Duke Weaselton - Surly Crook (3c Steel, 3/3 1L): "APPREHENDED When this character is banished, you may play a character with cost 2 or less for free." Trade him into anything; recur Snowball or Sly for free.
  • Francine - Eyeing the Evidence (3c Steel, 4/3 1L Resist +1, native Detective): best 3-cost stats. 4 ¤ trades up; effective 4 WP.

4-cost spine:

  • Chief Bogo - Calling the Shots (4c Steel, 4/1 1L): "MY JURISDICTION During your turn, this character can't be dealt damage. DEPUTIZE Your other characters gain the Detective classification." The tribal switch — flips Lateral Thinking, Case Closed, and Detective's Badge on. 1 WP dies to one ping on opp's turn; protect with McHorn.
  • Judy Hopps - Uncovering Clues (4c Sapphire, 3/3 1L, Detective): "THOROUGH INVESTIGATION When you play this character and whenever she quests, look at the top 3 cards of your deck. You may reveal a Detective character card and put it into your hand." Post-Bogo hits ~80% of the deck.
  • Nick Wilde - Wily Fox (4c Sapphire, 2/4 2L, Inf-only): "IT'S CALLED A HUSTLE When you play this character, you may return an item card named Pawpsicle from your discard to your hand." Recursion engine + 4-WP wall.
  • Mayor Winddancer - Actor-Turned-Politician (4c Steel, 5/7 1L vanilla, non-inkable): highest WP/ink. Profitable challenges into him require 5+ ¤.

5-cost top end:

  • Nick Wilde - Persistent Investigator (5c Steel, 5/4 2L, Shift 3, Detective): "CASE CLOSED During your turn, whenever one of your Detective characters banishes another character in a challenge, draw a card." Shift onto Nick-Sly for 3 ⬡ as early as T3. Grind engine post-Bogo.
  • McHorn - Ice-Cold Officer (5c Steel, 6/5 1L Bodyguard, Detective): Bogo protector. Absorbs opp's challenge turn.

6-cost finishers:

  • Judy Hopps - Lead Detective (6c Sapphire, 6/4 2L, Shift 4, Detective): "LATERAL THINKING During your turn, your Detective characters gain Alert and Resist +2." Shift onto any Judy for 4 ⬡ as early as T4. Alert = quest-then-challenge same turn; Resist +2 walls most 1-2 ¤ challengers.
  • Clawhauser - Donut Detective (6c Steel, 5/6 2L Challenger +2, native Detective): effective 7 ¤ on challenge, 6 WP. Cantrips via CASE CLOSED on every banish.

Items / locations:

  • Pawpsicle (1c Sapphire item, Inf-only): "JUMBO POP When you play this item, you may draw a card. THAT'S REDWOOD Banish this item — Remove up to 2 damage from chosen character." Cantrip + heal; 2-3 plays/game via Wily Fox.
  • Detective's Badge (1c Sapphire item): "PROTECT AND SERVE ⟳, 1 ⬡ — Chosen character gains Resist +1 and the Detective classification until the start of your next turn." Bogo-substitute.
  • Zootopia - Police Headquarters (1c Steel location, 4 WP 1L): "NEW INFORMATION Once during your turn, whenever you move a character here, you may draw a card, then choose and discard a card." Free filter + 1 lore/turn.

Matchups

vs. Amethyst/Sapphire Evasive (Unfavorable): Watch for: Dumbo - Ninth Wonder of the Universe, Hades - Looking for a Deal Format's biggest archetype (~22% metashare) and our hardest matchup. Their Evasive characters bypass walls — 7 WP Mayor Winddancer doesn't matter if nothing can challenge him. We have zero hard removal. Plan: race to LATERAL THINKING by T6. Once Judy Hopps - Lead Detective is in play the board has Alert — questers can challenge back after questing, the only way to take down a quested Dumbo. Below 8 lore by T5 the matchup is slipping.

vs. Amber/Emerald Aggro (Favorable): Watch for: Tramp - Street-Smart Dog, Under the Sea Best matchup. Their plan is 1-2 WP flood; ours is 2-7 WP walls plus board-wide Resist +1/+2 post-Bogo. Challenges into Mayor Winddancer (5/7) and Clawhauser - Donut Detective (5/6 Challenger +2) are unprofitable trades. Under the Sea at T5+ debuffs us, but Resist +1 (Snowball, Francine) absorbs most of the sting.

vs. Amethyst/Steel Challengers (Even): Watch for: Strength of a Raging Fire, Beast - Snowfield Troublemaker Mirror-shape grind. Our Resist +1/+2 stacks neutralize most challenger trades — they need 5+ effective STR to consistently kill our bodies. Raging Fire at T5+ sweeps Bogo (1 WP) and McHorn — bait it by playing Bogo behind McHorn into a wider board so the song spends value. Nick Wilde - Persistent Investigator CASE CLOSED out-cards them after T5.

vs. Amber/Steel Steelsong (Favorable): Watch for: He Hurled His Thunderbolt, Angel - Experiment 624 Songs are slower than our flat 2-lore body density. Thunderbolt removes one of ours; we replay via Judy-Uncovering's dig + Pawpsicle cantrips. Resist +2 from Lead Detective means action-burn songs need 3+ damage to remove our bodies — most don't. 2-lore wall density overruns their lore total by T7.

vs. Ruby/Sapphire Control (Unfavorable): Watch for: Maui - Hero to All, A Pirate's Life Hard-removal cleanly answers our finishers — Maui - Hero to All banishes Lead Detective for free. No protection beyond Ward on Duke-Small-Time. Spread threats so single answers don't end the game. Land Bogo behind McHorn Bodyguard; keep 2-3 questers active so when they Maui Lead Detective the rest of the board keeps lore-ticking.

vs. Mirror (Sapphire/Steel Detective) (Even): Watch for: Judy Hopps - Lead Detective, Nick Wilde - Persistent Investigator Whoever lands Bogo + Lead Detective first wins. Mayor Winddancer is the swing card — 5 ¤ minus Resist +2 still kills 3-WP bodies. Don't ink the Mayor. Sequence Bogo BEFORE Lead Detective — playing Lead first without DEPUTIZE active means LATERAL THINKING only hits natively-Detective characters.

Tune It

Against Evasive-heavy meta (Amethyst/Sapphire Dumbo/Hades): -2 Mayor Winddancer - Actor-Turned-Politician / +2 extra Judy Hopps - Uncovering Clues. Winddancer's 5/7 wall is dead vs. flyers — they quest right past him. Trading him for a dig piece gets to LATERAL THINKING (Alert = post-quest challenge into Evasive) faster.

Against control-heavy meta (Ruby/Sapphire Maui-removal): -1 McHorn - Ice-Cold Officer / -1 Mayor Winddancer - Actor-Turned-Politician / +2 extra Detective's Badge. Ward on Duke-Small-Time plus more Badge copies means more single-turn Resist +1 protection on key questers when their removal hits.

Core-Only Variant (drops Inf-only S2 cards): -4 Duke Weaselton - Small-Time Crook (S2) / -4 Nick Wilde - Wily Fox (S2) / -4 Pawpsicle (S2) → +12 substitutes from Core 2-cost Sapphire 2-lore bodies, 4-cost 2-lore bodies, and 1-cost cantrip items. The Pawpsicle / Wily Fox loop is the biggest engine loss; lean harder on Zootopia - Police Headquarters moves and Judy Hopps - Uncovering Clues quests for card-flow.

Shared-card note: Judy Hopps - Lead Detective and Chief Bogo - Calling the Shots are unique to this build in the AMT lineup — no cross-deck inventory pressure on the named-Shift line.

Outlook: Core-legal through Set 13 for 14 of 17 unique cards. The S2 trio (Duke-Small-Time, Wily Fox, Pawpsicle) is Inf-format-locked. Watch S12+ for new Detective payoffs — direct upgrades to this shell.
